Key Considerations When Selecting Electrical Wiring

For someone who is planning any electrical work – whether this will take the form of a full rewire, an extension, a new kitchen circuit, or simply replacing damaged sections – one of the most important tasks will be choosing the right wiring.

If you were to select an unsuitable cable for a given application, this could lead to such undesirable consequences as overheating, voltage drop issues, tripped breakers, or even fire hazards. For fixed electrical installations carried out in the UK, there is also the all-important matter of ensuring compliance with the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671).

In light of all this, we are aiming this guide to electrical wiring chiefly at readers in the UK. However, much of what we state here is likely to be useful for you if you are a homeowner, landlord, DIY enthusiast, or qualified electrician working on projects elsewhere in the world.

1. Compliance With BS 7671 (The 18th Edition)

Presuming you are, indeed, undertaking an electrical installation in the UK, the most important element will be making sure all wiring satisfies the BS 7671 standard, presently in its 18th Edition (and updated through amendments).

It is worth pointing out that these regulations are not, in and of themselves, UK law. However, complying with them is the standard way to fulfil legal obligations in accordance with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and Part P of the Building Regulations.

  • Safety certification: major work must be certified with an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC). For smaller changes – such as the addition of sockets to an existing circuit – a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate (MEIWC) will be necessary.
  • Competent persons: it is strongly recommended that you use electricians registered with a Competent Person Scheme (CPS), such as NICEIC or NAPIT. This will enable you to ensure the work carried out is self-certified and compliant.

2. Selecting The Appropriate Cable Type

Different areas and applications necessitate the use of different forms of electrical wiring. Here are some of the most common cable designs, which vary in the loads they can handle and the environmental conditions they are designed to stand up to:

  • Twin and earth (T&E) cables, which are the “workhorse” of UK domestic wiring. These flat, grey PVC-sheathed cables (standard BS 6004) see widespread use for fixed internal installations like sockets and lighting.
  • Steel Wire Armoured (SWA) cables, which incorporate a tough metallic layer as a shield against mechanical damage. They are essential for outdoor or underground applications, such as power to a garage or garden lighting.
  • Flexible cords (flex) are typically used for connecting such appliances as kettles and irons to the mains. They can cope well with regular movement, thanks to their use of stranded copper.
  • Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) cables emit minimal toxic fumes in the event of a fire. These cables are therefore increasingly specified in escape routes, public buildings, or high-occupancy areas to improve fire safety.

3. Sizing For Load And Voltage Drop

It is crucial, too, to select the correct cross-sectional area (CSA) for the conductor. Getting your decision right here will help prevent overheating, in addition to making sure power delivery is as efficient as possible.

  • Lighting circuits typically use T&E cable measuring 1.0mm2 or 1.5mm2.
  • With regard to socket circuits or connectors i.e. Molex, 2.5mm2 T&E cable is usually needed for standard ring or radial circuits.
  • High-power appliances such as electric showers or cookers often require cables of much greater thickness. This may be 6.0mm2, 10mm2, or even as much as 16mm2, depending on the kilowatt (kW) rating of the appliance and the length of the run.
  • Voltage drop can be another big issue with electrical wiring. For long cable runs, it will be necessary to increase the size to ensure the voltage delivered stays within acceptable limits. This is typically 3% for lighting and 5% for other uses.

4. Installation Environment And ‘Derating’

Inevitably, the environment in which the given cable is placed will significantly affect its “current-carrying capacity”.

  • Thermal insulation: if a cable is buried in loft insulation, it won’t be able to dissipate heat as easily. This means it will need to be “derated”; in other words, it must be essentially treated as if it can carry less current than its standard rating.
  • Grouping: due to shared heat, derating will also be required if multiple cables are run together in the same conduit or trunking.
  • Mechanical protection: if cables are concealed in walls at a depth of less than 50mm, they could be at risk of accidental damage in the future from screws or nails. For this reason, additional protection – such as RCDs or earthed metallic conduit – is often put in place in such circumstances.

While fixed electrical wiring focuses on safe power distribution, modern electronic systems also depend heavily on PCB assembly quality. In electronics manufacturing, processes such as SMT stencil design optimization help ensure accurate solder paste deposition and reduce assembly defects in surface-mount components. Proper stencil optimization improves production reliability and minimizes issues like solder bridging and insufficient solder joints.

Final Tips as You Make Your Choice of Electrical Wiring

Remember that the mixing of different cable types or sizes on the same circuit can be a dangerous practice that often violates electrical codes, due to its creation of fire and shock risks. Such mixing is only acceptable if you adhere to specific, expert-level criteria.

Ultimately, if you have any significant electrical work that needs to be undertaken in the UK, you should use a Part P-registered electrician.
